The armed raids and violence against civilians and religious personnel continues in the South Kivu province (Democratic Republic of Congo). Durig the night between Saturday and Sunday the parish of Mubumbano (70km south-west of Bukavu, administrative centre of South Kivu) was attacked for the second time in less than one month. Unidentified gunmen killed two security guards and raided the house of the nuns, that however moved away some time ago due to the insecurity in the region. The group also attacked the parish priest, whose identity has not been released, injuring him critically. In the last few days in Idjwi, a man was taken from his home by a commando of Rwandan soldiers, who during the raid also tortured the man's wife. For the moment there are no confirmations on the whereabouts of the civilian or the reason for his capture. Meanwhile, reports arrived from Uvira concerning the death last Friday of the Munyamulenge commander known as "Shetani" (Swahili word for demon). According to our MISNA sources, Shetani was shot while travelling on an armoured car in the Makobola area. He reportedly died after arriving at the hospital of Uvira and was buried in the same cemetery as the Banyamulenge killed in Kalemie. Shetani, who has on various occasions acted out his own death, is accused of responsibility in various massacres of Rwandan Hutu refugees and Congolese civilians: such as the Makobola massacre, carried out during the 1999 New Year, and that of Kalambi in September of last year. South Kivu is controlled by the Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD-Goma), backed by the Rwandan troops. (BO)
