Lumbu Lumbu, former honorary Social Affairs Minister of the then Republic of Zaire, died a few days ago in Butembo-Beni (North-east Congo Kinshasa), from injuries inflicted during interrogations conducted by the security forces of the RCD (Congolese Rally for Democracy). Our MISNA sources, which communicated the news, are still attempting to discover ulterior details regarding the death of the former Minister, a top figure of the North-eastern Congolese civil society. The arrest, life threatening conditions and hospitalisation in Beni due to torture, of Désiré Lumbu Lumbu, were already reported by the MISNA on the 17/11/99 ("Reseau-Congo: Persecution of Civil Society Members in Butembo") and on the 23/11/99 ("Butembo-Beni: Concern for New Arrests of Civil Society Members"). North-east Kivu is controlled by Ugandan troops of the Congolese factions led by Ernest Wamba dia Wamba and Jean Pierre Bemba, all operative within the anti-President Laurent Désiré Kabila forces.
